The Czech Republic has a relatively extensive road system, and its highway system keeps expanding every year. The best and fastest way to reach Prague by car is by taking the highway from Germany, either from the West via Pilsen or from the North (the highway from Dresden is almost completed). The trip from the German border can take less than 2 hours. Another good route is the highway from Bratislava, Slovakia, although it is longer. However,
the Czech Republic is a relatively small country and you can cross it from West to East within about 5 to 6 hours. Lights must be switched on all year long and if traveling on a highway you will need a road-fund license (dalnicni znamka), which you can buy at any gas station. Drivers must be at least 18 years of age. Children under 12 aren’t allowed to sit on the front seat. Blood alcohol content is not tolerated, even if it is very low.
