He is considered to be the most significant Czech Baroque composer of the 17th century. He specialized in orchestral creations.
He was born into a simple Moravian family and his father was a corporal in the castle’s guards. He studied at the Jesuit school in Opava, where he met composer Heinrich Biber who significantly influenced Vejvanovsky’s work. After he graduated he entered the service of the Olomouc Bishop and in 1664 he
became court musician. He continued to rise in his career and soon became the head of the Bishop’s orchestra, which greatly improved his financial situation. Vejvanovsky’s repertoire included secular sonnets and ballets as well as mass choirs, psalms and litanies. He based his work on Renaissance principles and his trumpet compositions were very original.
He died a well-respected and wealthy citizen of the town of Kromeriz.
