Matej Rejsek
He was an autodidact and made is training in the tradition of the Prague stone-cutting workshops. He was a contemporary of Benedikt Ried and both their work display common traits – primarily the combination of late Gothic stone-cutting tradition with innovative Renaissance principles.
Rejsek’s major achievement in Prague is the New Tower, today known as the Powder Tower, in the Old Town close to the then royal residence. After 1489 he was called to Kutna Hora, a major silver mining center, where he took over the construction of the St Barbara cathedral.
