Joze Plecnik
He was a Slovene architect born in Ljubljana. After the election of the first Czechoslovak president T.G. Masaryk, he was appointed the official architect of the Prague Castle. Plecnik’s distinct style, which audaciously combined Viennese Secession elements with the tradition of Mediterranean architecture, left a substantial mark on today’s aspect of the castle. His first work was the revitalization of the South Garden, followed by grand modifications of
all the courtyards, the construction of the hypostyle hall near the Matthias gate, as well as arrangements of the presidential rooms. Plecnik wasn’t only the Castle’s architect. With time he had become close friends with President Masaryk and his family, with whom he shared the same ideas. Plecnik’s work in Prague wasn’t restricted to the castle precinct, as proved by the impressive Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the George of Podebrady Square.
