Ignatius Ullmann
Ullmann worked on public and private constructions in Prague, as well as on the restoration of historic monuments. Similarly to numerous 19th century architects in Prague, he was influenced by Romantic Historicism and its fascination for the spirit of the Middle Ages. The needs of modern urban life led him to appreciate the tractable possibilities of
the Neo-Renaissance style. Ullman’s major creations undoubtedly include the St Cyril and Methodius Church in the Karlin District, or the Lazansky palace on the Vltava River banks near the National Theater. Although he remained in the shadow of the architect Josef Zitek’s success, Ullman’s contribution to the shape of the metropolis is undeniable.
