Carlo Lurago
In Prague, this architect’s work can be retraced back to the 1530’s. There is no information as to Lurago’s training, but he probably learned his craft in his native Italy. He mainly worked for the order of the Jesuits. His most significant work was the construction of the Jesuit school – the Clementinum
– in the Old Town, near the Charles Bridge. Until he moved out of Prague to Passau in southern Germany, Lurago was one of the busiest Prague architects of his time. He gathered around himself a large colony of Italian craftsmen, whose work had a substantial impact on the Baroque aspect of the city.
