The oval shape tower was built as part of the new northern bailey fortification of the Prague Castle at the end of the 15th century by architect Benedikt Ried, under the reign of Vladislav Jagellonský. There is a massive gun bulwark that has never been tested in battle. A bell-casting workshop was housed in the tower during the Renaissance as well as an alchemy laboratory under the reign of Rudolf the Second. During the Thirty Year War, the tower was used as a
warehouse for gunpowder, hence the name Powder Tower. Also during the Thirty Year War, the Swedish troops caused an explosion here, which damaged the tower significantly. In the 16th century, there was for a short time a secret ammunition laboratory. In 1754, when bought by the Vyšehrad Chapter, it became the residence of St. Vitus Cathedral sextons.
Currently the tower houses a permanent exhibition of astrology and alchemy in the days of Rudolf the Second.
