Info text

The Powder Gate was built in place of a defense tower that was part of the Old Town medieval fortification. The new tower was built by Old Town burghers in honor of King Ladislav Jagellonský. The foundation stone was laid down in 1475 with the participation of the king. Matěj Rejsek supervised construction work. But more than for the original defensive reason, the new gate was actually used for representation purposes and for the collection of customs duty charges.

The structure was never actually completely finished and it gradually deteriorated over time. In the beginning of the 18th century, the tower was even used as a gunpowder warehouse, hence today's name. The Powder Gate was rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker in a Neo-Gothic style that significantly modified its original appearance. The gallery at the top of the tower offers a unique view over the roofs of the Old Town.
