Vlašská Street
The name of the street beneath the steep Petřín Hill was given by Italian tradesmen and brick masons, who had started to live in this area at the end of the 16th century. Italian gangs of brick masons built most of the Baroque palaces and churches in Prague. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Italian
community was so large that not only houses were built, but also a hospital. In contrast with the narrow streets and their small houses, there are two superb Baroque palaces: the Lobkowicz Palace (Embassy of the United States of America) and the Colloredo Palace (Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany).
