Lesser Town Square
*The Baroque church of St. Mikuláš actually divides the Lesser Town Square in two parts, the upper and the lower part. In the past, the square was used as a marketplace, the same as with all the other squares in Prague. For example in the middle ages, there used to be gallows or a pillory on the square. The upper part of the square used to be called Italian Place, because
of foreign sellers offering their products and merchandise there. A Baroque plague pillar dedicated to the Holy Trinity has been preserved until today and it is one of the most beautiful plague pillars in Prague. It was carved by a stonemason following Giovanni Battista Alliprandi´s design in 1713, as an act of thanksgiving for the eradication of the plague in Prague.
