The square was an integral part of the plans for the New Town and it was founded by Emperor Charles the Fourth in 1348. However, it has had the Emperor's name only since the 19th century. Under his reign, the square was most frequently called "Velké Tržiště" (Large Market), and from the 15th century the name "Dobytčí Trh" (Livestock Market) was quite common. From 1393, the gothic chapel of Corpus Christi stood in the centre. It was demolished at the end of the 18th century following a decree from Emperor
Joseph the Second. The importance of the square was further strengthened by the construction of the city hall and also by the annual display of the holy relics and imperial crown jewels. It took place here regularly every second Friday after Easter during the reign of Charles the Fourth.
The Charles Square is the largest square in Prague; its area reaches over 80,500 square meters. The main part of the square has been turned into an English style park completed towards the end of the 19th century.
