House at the Minute
*This two-storeyed house adjoining a quadrant of houses next to Old Town Hall is noteworthy for its sgraffito which is one of the finest preserved examples. The Gothic house’s façade has been decorated from the beginning of the 17th century; it is etched in the Mannerist style, the sgraffito depicts various
Biblical and mythological scenes, as well as Renaissance legends. Franz Kafka lived here with his parents from 1889-1896. The house was later called “At the Minute” was taken from the word “minute,” i.e. very tiny, since it has been documented that tobacco used to be sold in very small quantities here.
