This Neo-Renaissance palace is one of the top cultural and social life venue in Prague.
The palace was built between 1836 and 1837, when its erstwhile owner, Václav Antonín Novotný, decided to build a representative building in honor of the Archduchess Žofie. The palace was built in a Classicist style, and then became the place to hold events. The Slavic Convention
was held here in the turbulent year of 1848.
In 1884, the island as well as the palace was bought by a Prague Borough and was reconstructed into today's Neo-Renaissance style. Until the construction of the Obecní House, the Žofín Palace was the centre of cultural and social life in Prague. It is still today a popular place for concerts, balls or conferences.
