Charles the Fourth Monument
The monument to Emperor Charles the Fourth was unveiled in 1851. Charles the Fourth was called "Father of the Motherland". The original intention was to unveil the monument in the year of the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Charles University, which he had initiated. However, the plan was hampered by the events of 1848. The pedestal of the monument is decorated with
sitting allegory female figures, which impersonate the four schools of the university: The School of Theology, The School of Medicine, The School of Law, and The School of Philosophy. The standing figure of the emperor holds in his hand the Golden Charter, which was the university founding document. The monument was designed by sculptor Ernst Hähnel from Dresden, Germany.
