In its day, this maternity hospital belonged among Europe’s most modern. Built from 1867 to 1875 in the Northern German Gothic style, the building uses gray brick, a material rarely used in Bohemia. The hospital’s architect was
the well-known Josef Hlávka who constructed the hospital in a very elaborate way, including two separate divisions and two secret entrances which allowed the daughters of rich bourgeois and nobles to give brith in secret.
