In the 15th century, the Building u Halánků was connected to brewery rights and malting trade. Such activity was conducted here continuously until the end of the 19th century. One of the most important owners of the building was the Fingerhut-Náprstek family. In 1862, a world-traveller named Vojta Náprstek established a Czech Industrial Museum in the building. In addition to the technical exhibits, it acquired extensive ethnographic
and artistic collections from the entire world, some brought back by Náprstek from his travelling around the world, and some donated by other Czech world-travellers. Vojtěch Náprstek, who had lived ten years in the United States of America, became the first advocate to the female emancipation movement in Prague. During the Náprstek family days the place became an important centre of national and cultural life in Prague.
