St. Wenceslas Monument
* *The upper part of Wenceslas Square is dominated by the monument of St. Wenceslas riding on a horse, he´s the main saint and protector of our country. The author of the bronze statue was the most renowned sculptor in Bohemia Josef Václav Myslbek. He worked on the monument for over thirty years but the definite unveiling didn´t happen until 1924, after the sculptor's death. There are 4 smaller statues of Saints around St Wenceslav: St. Ludmila, St. Agnes, St. Prokop, and St. Vojtěch.
On the pedestal beneath the statue are the symbolic words: "SVATÝ VÁCLAVE, VÉVODO ČESKÉ ZEMĚ, KNÍŽE NÁŠ, NEDEJ ZAHYNOUTI NÁM NI BUDOUCÍM" (SAINT WENCESLAS, DUKE OFTHE BOHEMIAN LAND, OUR PRINCE, DON'T LET US PERISH, NEITHER THOSE AFTER US).
In front of the monument, during significant events of modern Czech history, spontaneous demonstrations took place. In peacetime, it is one of the favourite meeting points called "u koně" (by the horse) or "pod ocasem" (under the tail).
