Valdštejn Palace
* *Albrecht of Valdštejn, generalissimo of the Imperial Troops and a bizarre hero of the Thirty Year War, undertook the construction of his palace in Prague in style, or more specifically, in a megalomaniac way. The palace was completed in record time between 1624 and 1630 on land where previously stood twenty-six houses, six gardens, two brick factories and one lime factory. The project of the palace was entrusted to Italian builders Andreo Spezzi and Giovanni Pieroni. A unique early Baroque structure of the palace was made in the Prague vicinity.
The representative and residential part is situated around four indoor courtyards, to which a beautiful garden is attached, exceptional in its size, given that it´s in the centre of the city, as well as in its artistic importance.
The rich interior furnishing and decoration is dominated by a ceiling fresco in the main hall, the work of Italian painter Baccio di Bianco, portraying the God of War Mars on a battle cart. The not too much hidden significance of the fresco was the glorification of the war skills of Albrecht of Valdštejn alone.
