The convent was probably the first building made in the Gothic style not only in Prague but also in the Bohemian lands. The convent of St.Claire Nuns was founded in 1234 by King Wenceslas the First to the wishes of his sister Agnes, who became the first superior of the Order of St. Claire. In addition to the convent of St. Claire, a monastery of the male Order of the Minorites was founded and a church built dedicated to St. Francis. In the centre, the church dedicated to St. Salvatore is of importance, it was built between the years 1270 and 1280 and it is the first evidence of French
Gothic style in Prague. The chancel of the church was also founded as royal burial ground. Among many, the Přemyslide King and founder of the monastery Wenceslas the First was buried here.
During the Hussite wars in the 15th century, the St. Claire Nuns left the convent, which was then seriously damaged. The decay culminated after the final abolition by Emperor Joseph the Second.
After extensive renovation at the end of the last century, the convent of St.Agnes of Bohemia became part of the National Gallery in Prague, which houses in its premises a collection of medieval art.
