Martinic Palace
*The Martinic Palace is among the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Prague. Exceptional figurative sgraffito adorns the façade which depicts episodes from the life of Joseph the Egyptian. The credit for the palace’s Renaissance appearance primarily falls to Jiří Bořita from Martinic who bought the palace in 1583 and began its large-scale reconstruction. He had the building enlarged and the façade decorated
with a split coat-of-arms. 1618 saw the famous defenestration at Prague Castle where the frustrated nobility and bourgeoisie threw Martinic and Slavat, along with their scribes, out their office window due to their corruption and loyalty to Vienna instead of Prague. Fortunately, they were not injured, however they did flee the country. Afterwards, the palace was rebuilt and enlarged in the early Baroque style.
