The bridge built following architect Antonín Balšánek´s plans between 1898 and 1901 replaces an older chain bridge, which for more than half a century connected today's Národní Street to the Lesser Town. The new bridge had its name changed several times during the 20th century depending
on the different political changes: in 1901 it is called: Franz Joseph the First bridge; in 1918 Legion Bridge; between 1938 and 1945 Bedřich Smetana bridge; after 1945 First of May bridge; and again in 1990 Legion Bridge.
The bridge gives access by stairs to the Střelecký Island.
