Lažanský Palace – Coffeehouse Slavia
*One of the most famous coffeehouse in Prague as well as the "AMU" (Academy of Musical Arts) found their place in the monumental building of the Lažanský Palace. The new building made by Ignác Ullmann between 1861 and 1863 stands in place of a former brick factory and it represents a unique example of the French Neo-Renaissance in Prague. In 1881, the ground floor of the building was modified
to accommodate the needs of the Coffeehouse Slavia, which in the 20th century became one of the centres of the cultural and intellectual life in Prague. Among the regular guests we find Václav Havel, playwright, dissident and later first President of the Czech Republic. The interior of the coffeehouse is dominated by a painting by Viktor Oliva untitled "Piják Absintu" (Absinth Drinker).
