Malá Strana Tower
* *These paired towers form the entrance to Charles Bridge from Malá Strana. The shorter of them, known as the Judith Tower, dates from Romanesque times at the beginning of the 12th century. It was part of Malá Strana’s medieval battlements. Built from argillite, the tower is not only older than Charles Bridge itself, but was also apparently even built before the Judith Bridge. The remains of rusticated plaster, window chambers, coats-of-arms and roofs date from the Renaissance reconstruction in 1591. At the beginning
of the 15th century, a prison for the worst offenders was established in the tower. From the end of the 16th century until 1784, the tower served as a customs office. The second tallest tower was built in 1464 to replace the original Romanesque tower which stood on the same site. The tower was built in the same style as Parler’s Old Town Tower on the other side of Charles Bridge. At the time, sandstone was widespread as building material and thus used to build the quadrants which comprise the tower.
