The Zoological Garden Prague was opened in 1931. It is one of the most modern zoological parks. The animals live in conditions that are as close as possible to their natural environment. The Zoological Garden Prague participates in helping to save many endangered animal species and it keeps the world studbooks for some of them.
The 2002 floods seriously affected the Zoo; almost half of the area was under water. The floods caused the death of numerous animals and the demolition of damaged buildings. Nevertheless, several new and interesting buildings were constructed which are better adapted to the needs of a modern zoological gardens. A seal
named Gaston came to symbolise the struggle against the water as it swam up the Vltava River all the way to Dresden, Germany, where he was finally caught. However, during his transportation back he died of exhaustion. At the bottom of the zoological garden, there is an originally designed underwater memorial to Gaston.
The latest feature of the garden is the Indonesian Jungle pavilion, which is the largest and the most expensive pavilion in the history of the Czech Republic animal parks. It was built between 2002 and 2004 in place of the Monkey Pavilion.
Within the past years, the number of the visitors has reached one-million per year.
