Vrtbovský Garden
* *The facade of the Vrtbovský Palace conceals a real gem in the shape of a garden, which is, not only in Prague, but in the whole of Central Europe among the best. The not so large garden was created on the Petřín hillside in 1720 by architect František Maxmilián Kaňka in place of a former vineyard. Is has an irregular shape that is in harmony with the palace. The garden consists of three terraced platforms connected by steps and escalates the hill. The architect
entrusted the ornement work to the best artists of the time. The statues, dominated by the giant figure of Atlantes supporting the globe at the entrance gate of the garden, are the work of Matyáš Bernard Braun. The ceiling of the beautiful hall is decorated by frescos by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. The highest terrace features a pavilion with a beautiful view over the roofs of the Lesser Town houses all the way to the Prague Castle and the St. Mikuláš church.
