Royal Garden
*This beautiful garden was willed by Emperor Ferdinand the First of Habsburgs in 1534 in place of a field where grapevine was grown. It was connected to the castle through the bridge over the Deers Trench. The garden was designed in the Italian style and gradually appended with other structures – the Renaissance Belvedere of Queen Anna with a bronze fountain, and a ball game hall called "Míčovna". There was a menagerie as well, it was built between 1581 and 1583 and it was called either Lion's Court of Bear's Court. The garden featured rare trees and bushes,
chestnuts, and the first tulips in Europe, which were donated by the Turkish Sultan. From here, the tulips were taken to the Netherlands, which is now renowned for growing them. The Baroque modifications in the garden are connected to the famous names of architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and sculptor Matyáš Braun. Part of the garden was also the so-called "Little House", which was used as living quarters for the Czechoslovak Presidents. In those days, the garden was not accessible to the public. The garden was permanently made accessible in spring 1990.
