Kampa
* *Čertovka, an artificial arm of the Vltava River, separates the island of Kampa from the Lesser Town bank. Čertovka acquired the nickname "Venice of Prague" thanks to the picturesque architecture of the houses built above the canal which evoke the atmosphere of the Italian city. Preserved until today, the mill wheel of the former Velkopřevorský Mill reminds us of the original purpose of this water channel.
The banks of Kampa were raised over time because of both natural floods and landfills. They already had today´s appearance at the beginning of the 17th century. The park occupying most of the island's area was created by bringing down the fences and walls of the original Baroque gardens. The island has always been known for its pottery market that was held here at the turn of the 16th and the 17th century.
