Franciscan Garden
*The garden, as its name suggests, was originally the garden of the monastery of the Order of Barefoot Franciscan Monks who used it from the beginning of the 17th century. The garden was laid by the Order of the Barefoot Carmelite Monks, who started to live here shortly after the foundation of the New Town in 1348. The garden was first meant to serve the practical purpose of growing herbs, flowers, vegetables as well as fruit trees, the Franciscans used to grow spices here as well.
The Baroque pavilion in the center of the garden is from the 18th century. The west wing used to hold the summer refectory and the pharmacy, and near the northern wall there was a deep well. Later a decorative fountain was built and the statues of saints were placed around it.
Today the garden is accessible to the public. It serves not only as a favorite resting spot inside the busy city, but also as a fast connection between the Jungmann Square and the Wenceslas Square.
