Based on the design of architects Oldřich Tyl and Josef Fuchs, the Palace of Exhibitions was built from 1925 to 1929. This revolutionary building in the Functionalist style was once the largest building in the the world and the first building in Prague to represent a revolutionary style. The gigantic palace has ten floors, two below-ground and eight above-ground, rising to a height
of 37 meters. The main exhibition space measure 24,000m₂. Fairs showcasing samples were held here until 1951 and later, the palace served as the site of several firms specializing in foreign trade. In 1974, a fire damaged this functionalist building. Since its reconstruction in 1995, the National Gallery’s collections of modern and contemporary art have been housed here.
