Info text

The Břevnov monastery of the Black Monks is the oldest male monastery in Bohemia. It was founded in 993 by Prince Boleslav the Second and Bishop Vojtěch. The late Baroque church of St. Margaret, which is the most valuable structure within the area of the monastery, is a single-nave hall structure with an extended sacrarium. It is one of the best architectural exemple of Czech Baroque. The church was built between 1708 and 1735 following Kryštof

Dientzenhofer´s plan. Its interior decoration is also exceptional, dominated by altar paintings by Petr Brandl. Beneath the Baroque work, archeology revealed a Roman crypt from around 1040, which represents one of the most valuable structures of that time in Bohemia.
The gate into the area of the monastery is the work of Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer from 1740. It is decorated with a sculpture of St. Benedict with the emblem of the monastery.
