Old Town Hall
*Dominated by its Gothic tower, the exquisite town hall is comprised of an extensive grouping of several buildings, some of which date from Romanesque times. Its focal point is the clock which dates from the 15th century and was designed by Nicolas from Kadaň, the royal clock maker. The clock’s construction is connected with the legend of Master Hanuš. Since he was the builder of this unique work, he was supposedly blinded by the Prague councilors so he could never produce another such
object. Each hour, on the hour, the twelve holy apostles file past to Death’s ringing of a bell and the rooster’s crowing. It was here that George from Poděbrady was pronounced king in 1458. Likewise, after the Czech estates were disbanded, the leader among them was imprisoned here and on June 21, 1621, 27 Protestant leaders were executed here.
In the 18th century, the remaining Prague cities were joined together and the town hall became the central administration for the city.
