Church of St. Peter & St. Paul
*The capitular and parish church was founded by Prince Vratislav the Second around 1070 following the exemple of the Roman church of St. Peter and St. Paul. According to the legend, Prince Vratislav himself brought back twelve baskets of stones for the building foundation. The Vyšehrad chapter was independent of the Prague Bishop and it was directly administered by the Pope in Rome. This independence lasted until the middle of the 18th century.
To the initiation of Emperor Charles
the Fourth, the original Romanesque basilica was reconstructed in a Gothic style triple-nave church with side chapels. The Baroque modifications of the church were done in the beginning of the 18th century following Santini´s an architect František Maxmilián Kaňka´s design. The current Neo-Gothic appearance is from the 19th century and it was completed by Josef Mocker. The towers in front of the church were built in 1903 together with a sculpture relief above the main portal.
