The construction of the church, together with the convent of the Order of the Shoed Augustinian Nuns, was meant as a thanksgiving to St. Catherine by Emperor Charles the Fourth, who, on St. Catherine's saint’s day won the Battle at San Felice. The Gothic church and cloister were built between 1355 and 1367. The structure was burned down by the Hussites at the beginning of the 15th century. Today's Baroque appearance is the work of architect František Maxmilián Kaňka and it was completed between 1718 and 1730. The church of St. Catherine is the work
of Baroque architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. From the original Gothic church, he preserved only the tall tower by the entrance. Because of its shape, it is sometimes called the "Prague Minaret". The unique Baroque hall structure with a transversal nave has rich decorations, such as a fresco by Václav Vavřinec Reiner.
After the monastery was shut down by Emperor Joseph the Second at the end of the 18th century, the premises were used by an institution treating the mentally ill. Music composer Bedřich Smetana died inside this building.
